Shadow Mentor Day 2018

In collaboration with AIAS, we worked with firms from Eugene, Salem, and Portland, OR and Seattle, WA to create Shadow Mentor Day.
This is an opportunity for architecture and interior architecture students at University of Oregon (all years, undergraduate or graduate) to connect with professionals and learn about firm culture.

Divided Cities: Modern Gentrification Panel
APRIL 13, 2017
The theme for the HOPES[23] conference was displacement. We wanted to shed light on the effects that designers can have regarding affordability and livability for people within cities. We put together a panel to discuss what the designers role should be in helping mitigate displacement of communities:

-
Becca Cavell
Architect at Bora Architects
-
Howard Davis
Professor, UO Architecture Dept.
-
Anne Godfrey
Senior Instructor I, UO Landscape Architecture Dept.
-
Gerardo Sandoval
Associate Professor, UO Planning, Public Policy, and Management Dept.
Shadow Mentor Day
JANUARY 27, 2017
In collaboration with the AIA chapter at UO, we organized an opportunity for architecture and interior architecture students to shadow a Pacific Northwest firm for a day! Students got to learn firm culture, a glimpse of a day in the life, and made connections with professionals and potential mentors.

Shadow Mentor Day started in 2016 and is now an annual event. This year, 20 firms participated in this event. Contact us if your firm would like to participate in the upcoming year!
Lunchtime Talk
with Val Glitsch
FAIA, LEED AP
November 14, 2016
Lunchtime Talks are opportunities for students to connect with faculty and practicing professionals and to learn about their work. Val Glitsch is a sole proprietor with design projects that have been recognized with honors and awards at local, state, and national levels. She was elected to the AIA College of Fellows, an honor given to only 3% in the profession.
Book Club:
Where are the Women Architects?
By Despina Stratigakos
November 9, 2016
In her book, Stratigakos discusses the roles of women in architecture from the past, present, and future, the absence of women since the 19th century, and the hurdles they have today.
We provided students with copies of the book at the beginning of the Fall term and had a discussion mid term on thoughts from the reading. The discussion was led by Daisy Williams and Erin Moore. Multiple local professionals attended the discussion with students.

After the book club discussion, we pinned up three posters at school for students and faculty to respond to. Our questions included:

-
How do you define diversity?
-
How can we better promote equity within AAA (before it became College of Design)?
